My name is Kathy Wise, and I have been a mahjong player for 30 years, one decade longer than I have been an editor.
Last July, I was drinking Aperol spritzes and playing AquaMahj in my best friend’s pool when it hit me: there is no mahjong magazine. And there has never been one that touches on all the things I love about the game: strategy, history, culture, community, design, travel, philanthropy. And snacks—don’t forget the snacks.
So I created one.
Yes, I created a magazine in 2026. Because this one makes sense: a tactile, sensual, old-school medium for a tactile, sensual, timeless game.
I convinced Marshall McKinney,Garden & Gun’s founding creative director, to join me on this epic adventure. We threw out all the usual rules. We hired top editors and photographers. We bought expensive paper. We made advertising optional but the beautiful, surprising, all-consuming nature of the publication essential.
Then we liberally sprinkled in a whole lot of fun.
Each quarterly issue is designed around seasons and winds, offering a deep dive into a different city or region through the eyes of the game. We meet with fabulous players, tastemakers, historians, entrepreneurs—even therapists who share tips on how to get our minds right for mahjong (and life).
I don’t advise reading it in the pool. Instead, put on a caftan. Send your kids on a playdate. Hide your phone in the crisper drawer. Pour yourself a glass of wine or cucumber juice. Find a shady spot, preferably under a large, striped umbrella.
Then tell your mahjong friends all about it, and subscribe to become part of our joyful crew and receive exclusive invitations to events and one-of-a-kind product drops. (I’ll bring the snacks.)
Play boldly,
Kathy Wise
